Lowe Family Wine Co of Mudgee becomes King of Zin!
Mudgee winemakers Lowe Family Wine Co have been awarded the prestigious International Zinfandel Trophy at the International Wine Challenge in London for its 2003 Lowe Family Zinfandel. The judges remarked "Their first International Wine Challenge entry must hurt the US Zin kings!"
Made by Scottish Veterinarian turned winemaker Jane Wilson, the award is a triumph of her determination to grow and make this outstanding wine normally associated with the vineyards of North America.

Jane worked and learned the secrets of the Zinfandel variety with American Zinfandel guru Fred Peterson and was the instigator at Lowe Family Wine Co. to plant the variety and make the wine. Well supported by husband David Lowe, Jane recognised that the soils, climate and aspect of their Mudgee vineyard were perfect for Zinfandel.
The vines have only been established for 6 years, but are already demonstrating extraordinary consistency in the characteristics and quality of the fruit they produce and ultimately the wine. Subsequent vintages have already shown similar qualities to the 2003 vintage.
Produced from a dry land vineyard on the family property, the trophy winning wine from the 2003 vintage demonstrates a typical Mudgee richness with characteristics of prunes and olives.
Asked what winning the trophy means to Lowe Family Wine Co. David Lowe remarked "The Australian public doesn't always recognise quality until a wine receives international recognition, this award is not only recognition of the quality of our wines, but the wines from Mudgee as a whole."
"2003 was an exciting year for Zinfandel, the drought lowered yields, but produced outstanding fruit, and this wine is the result" David said.

The International Wine Challenge is the world’s biggest annual wine competition, with thousands of entries, and judges from across the globe winging their way to London every year. By opening, tasting and judging more than 9,000 bottles of wine, covering every type of grape, winemaking style and country, a fascinating insight into the wine world as it stands today.
About The Trophies These are the very top wines of the year, picked from amongst the Gold medal winners. Individual Trophies don't have to be awarded each year - a region or a grape variety may not receive one if the quality is not deemed high enough. So the wines are all something rather special
