Animals

We have chosen specific breeds of animals that suit a landscape of predominantly Australian native pasture and they graze in a fully integrated system in both the farm and the vineyard.

Cattle

Our Shorthorn Angus cross, mother herd are chosen for their ability to thrive and rear calves on native grass pastures. An old fashioned “smallholder “ cross they are at their best in this grazing system. They calve easily and are excellent mothers, “doing us proud” through both drought and good times.

Sheep

We use Dorpers, an African breed based on the ancient Persian sheep and the more modern Dorset. They are charming and intelligent sheep which behave more like goats with their browsing habits and ability to spot a hole in a fence. They shed their wool, thrive on native grasses and are fabulous mothers; grouping together to fiercely protect their lambs against foxes.

Pigs

We have a small number of old breed, free range pigs. A mixture of large Black and Berkshire, they are the comedians of the farm. Active and curious, they range freely in the paddocks with the ability to graze and wallow to their hearts’ content.
